SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2005

Welcome to those Hazy, Lazy, Days of Summer!

Beat the Heat
With the extremely hot weather here and to continue, there is no reason for your dog or cat to be outside for long periods of time. If they are outdoors, they should be under parental supervision and with a constant supply of fresh and cold water.

If you do let your dog or cat outside regularly, please make sure that there is a comfortable and shady area for them to rest. Early mornings and evenings are the ideal times to have your animal outdoors. The midday heat is just much too strong for your pet.

A dog can be kept cool with a cold treat. How about stuffing a Kong toy with Kong Stuff'n and freezing it? What results is a Kong-scicle that is refreshing. A Kong-scicle will also take a while to finish licking. Kennel Cafe has several different Kong products as well as Kong Stuff'n mixes to help you with this. Also, ask a sales associate for other ideas on Kong stuffing.

Why not add ice to the cat or dog's water bowl? This will keep the water cold for much longer.

Wanna make a cold chew toy for your dog? Get a tied rope toy and soak it in water. Follow by putting it in a plastic bag and throw it into the freezer. Once it is frozen, the dog has an ice cold chew toy to chew on. This also works great to help soothe puppies when teething. Kennel Cafe offers a wide variety of rope toys in different sizes and colours.

Heartworm
The summer is when many consider Heartworm preventative medication for their pets, especially dogs. If you believe that your dog has been bitten by a mosquito this summer, then your dog MAY be susceptibleto Heartworm. The reason why July is the month to be most concerned with Heartworm is because by July, enough days of warm weather have occurred for Heartworm to mature. Once the mosquito bites your dog and deposits Heartworm eggs into your dog's bloostream, it take 30 days of warm temperatures for those eggs to mature into adult worms, which grow in the dog's heart. The effects of treating Heartworm can be worse than the chemicals found in the preventative meds. Please visit your veterinarian for further information.
