Happy year of the dog!

Taking Your Pet Outdoors
Many of you will be heading outside with your pets now that the weather is getting warmer. Here are some tips and products that might make your outdoor excursions more enjoyable for your canine or feline friend.

For your cat, Kennel Cafe offers a great selection of collars, harnesses and leads. For your dog, Canine Equipment sports a line of training collars, step-in harnesses, and nylon leads in a wide variety of designs and colours. We also carry the popular Smoochy Poochy brand, known for its adjustable leads and no-escape clips which allow for hands-free walking and two-dog walking. Smoochy Poochy leads also come with a poop-bag pouch, so you don't forget to poop 'n scoop!

There's nothing more fun for a dog than running after a throw toy. Chuck-its, Flying Squirrels, Cool Kongs, Kong balls, and Grubbers are all great entertainment for your dog. If your bud loves the water, Katie's Bumpers are strong, colourful, and buoyant toys as well.

During warmer weather, your pet can become dehydrated very quickly. Remember to have water readily available. You can quench your pet's thirst with portable and collapseable water bowls available at the store. The Chewber, a rubber frisbee throw toy can be reversed and used as a portable water bowl. If you stop by the store, we always have fresh water out front!

Finally, never leave your pet in the car for extended periods of time during the warmer weather. The windows can magnify the heat, and turn your car into a deadly sauna.

No Fleas Please
Warmer weather brings lots of outdoor fun with your dog. However, it also brings FLEAS! Kennel Cafe offers a wide range of natural and medicated flea-products to help rid your pet of his or her unwanted guests. Buddy line flea products are all-natural, and contain flea repelling ingredients. "Bug Off" is also an all-natural line of products featuring flea powder and natural bug-repelling collars. We also carry the Zodiac line of flea products which are medicated.

New Pup or Kitten?
Planning on bringing home a new puppy or kitten? Come by the Kennel Cafe for all of your new family member's needs. We carry nutritionally balanced puppy and kitten foods, training treats, puppy kongs, scratching posts, and a great selection of toys for your new addition. We also carry several different training collars and leads in order to get your new pup accustomed to walks.

The BARF Bag
Many of you may have heard of the BARF Diet. BARF stands for Bones and Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. The diet which is becoming increasingly popular is mainly fed to dogs or cats. It is based on feeding raw meat, bones, veggies, organ meat, and supplements, and it was made famous by Dr. Ian Billinghurst.

The BARF Diet was based on a species appropriate diet. It was noticed that wolves, wild dogs, and wild cats thrived on raw muscle meat, bones, organ meat, and the digested plant matter found in the stomachs of their kill.

When certain pets with health problems were switched to the raw diet, there was a noticeable improvement in overall health and energy.

There are too many important details of the raw diet to describe in this article. However, we encourage you to come in and ask. The new store manager, Chris, is a raw feeder himself and can answer any questions or concerns you have. We also carry several books that explain raw feeding in detail.

If and when you do take the step towards feeding raw, the Kennel Cafe offers two pre-made raw food lines: Healthy Paws and The Ultimate Diet. We also carry a diverse selection of supplements that are essentials for the raw feeder.

Finally, please do not feel obligated to switch to a BARF diet. It is not for everyone. The Kennel Cafe carries holistic and nutritionally superior alternatives, and we would be happy to help you find a food suitable to your pet's nutritional needs.
